Equity gaps that have been agape for a while, they have successfully managed to close by implementing certain strategies that encourage the involvement of some minorities.

While many colleges have seen improvements in equity in recent years, only 13 schools, including LTCC, were noted for completely closing their equity gaps in English.”

Eventually ending in approval through votes, residents had in 1964 indicated their willingness to host a Community College. After indicating their willingness to host a Community College, the residents put heads and resources together to establish the city of South Lake Tahoe.

After that, it took almost exactly 10 years for 66% of voters to approve the formation of a Community College District and the selection of the first board of trustees. Dr. James Duke was hired by the Board in September 1974 as the college’s first president.

Lake Tahoe Community College opened its doors for the first time on Sept. 18, 1975, in a converted motel on Highway 50.

In its first year, 119 classes were offered to 1,407 students. The first graduating class of Spring 1976 consisted of 11 students. By 1979, there was already the push for the acquisition of a permanent site.

The purchase of a parcel on Al Tahoe Blvd. owned by the Shell Oil Company was negotiated and on Dec. 27, 1979, the title to the 164-acre plot in the center of South Lake Tahoe was recorded in the name of Lake Tahoe Community College.

The West Campus was opened in Fall 1982. It provided space for a library and three more classrooms in addition to what the Highway 50 campus provided.

Eventually, an expanded art lab and an intimate “Collegiate Theatre” were also included at the new site. This allowed for more space at the original converted motel campus.

Since the selection of Dr. James Duke, there have been many others who have led the college down to this point, who have done the job of keeping it going. Since then till now, many other buildings have been set up.
